Southeast Asian Women in “Exile”: Re-imagining histories of anti-colonialism, nationalism and feminism

The roundtable brought together the project team to reflect on their
year-long interdisciplinary collaboration recovering the suppressed
histories of women artists, writers, and activists across Southeast Asia.

  • Lillian Cameron
    Picture of Lillian Cameron
    Dr Lilian Cameron is a Senior Interdisciplinary Lecturer at the University of Sydney. She researches and teaches in art curating and museum studies, with a focus on contemporary curatorial practice, textual interpretation, and the relationships between artists, audiences, and collections. Her current projects span curating in Australia and the UK, museum education, and intersections with university teaching and learning. She is committed to supporting student pathways into the GLAM sector through Work Integrated Learning. Previously based in London, she held roles at Tate, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, and Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Her book Curating Art Now (Lund Humphries, 2022) examines power, inclusivity, and innovation in the post-pandemic curatorial landscape.
    • Anna Lawrenson
      Picture of Anna Lawrenson
      Dr Anna Lawrenson is Degree Director of the Art Curating program and teaches into the Museum and Heritage Studies program at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her research considers the civic role of museums and galleries by examining how their history, funding and administration shapes their approach to public engagement. She has co-authored an important monograph on blockbuster exhibitions in Australian museums and galleries (Routledge: 2019) and published in academic journals including Museum Management and Curatorship and Museums and Society. She has been commissioned to conduct research within the museum sector producing reports that have been used for policy development, advocacy and funding. Together with O’Reilly she is Associate editor for Exhibition Reviews for Curator: The Museum Journal.
      • Chiara O'Reilly
        Picture of Chiara O'Reilly
        Dr Chiara O’Reilly is the Director of the Postgraduate Museum and Heritage Studies Program at the University of Sydney. Her research examines museum and gallery history, collections, exhibitions and audience experience. Her work has been published in the Journal of the History of Collections, Museum Management and Curatorship and Museums and Social Issues and she co-authored the monograph The Rise of the Must-See Exhibition. Blockbusters in Australian Museums and Galleries (Routledge, 2019) with Dr Anna Lawrenson.
